Badlands Thistle

acrylic on canvas
24" x 18"

The wavyleaf thistle, a South Dakota native, Cirsium undulatum, is stout, rambunctious, and showy.  Whoever did the landscaping at the bottom end of Shorty Draw out in the (proposed) Red Shirt Wilderness did well to plant a wavyleaf prominently before a bald knob of a badlands hill, fine idea to beam blazing sunlight on it and install a pure blue sky, too.  My sincerest compliments.  Finding a painted parallel for a perfect day, for a feel of heat, for a dusty breeze across a wilderness pales in complexity to the realities of the place.
